Cobel Darou has introduced Canadian-manufactured Semaglutide to the Iranian pharmaceutical market under the brand name Velorita®. The launch of this medication marks a significant milestone in the management of weight loss, diabetes, and its common complications such as renal, cardiovascular, and fatty liver issues. Furthermore, the under-license production of Velorita® has commenced within the Cobel Group, and the locally manufactured, under-license version will be available shortly.
Injectable Semaglutide was developed by Novo Nordisk and is globally marketed under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy. By acting on various organs in the body, Semaglutide helps increase insulin secretion, lower glucagon levels and hepatic glucose production, delay gastric emptying, and promote a feeling of fullness (satiety).
Administered as a once-weekly injection, Velorita® brings ease of treatment and an improved quality of life to individuals living with obesity and diabetes. The use of this medication has demonstrated a clinically significant weight loss of up to 15% in overweight or obese individuals, which is accompanied by a substantial reduction in cardiovascular complications and associated mortality.
Obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease that has currently reached an “epidemic” scale worldwide. In 2022, over one billion people globally (approximately one in eight) were living with obesity. This disease is responsible for over 30,000 deaths annually, and in Iran, 6 out of 10 people are either living with obesity or are overweight.
Obesity is associated with numerous complications, including the risk of onset and progression of diabetes, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular events, premature death, and psychological challenges.
Type 2 diabetes significantly increases the risk of severe cardiovascular conditions such as myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke, and heart failure. Additionally, Type 2 diabetes has a profound impact on the progression of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and is one of the leading causes of renal failure worldwide.
Velorita®, containing the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) Semaglutide, is a novel therapeutic option in the field of metabolic diseases. Semaglutide is the first approved medication in the GLP-1 receptor agonist class available as a once-weekly injection, bringing about a major breakthrough in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and weight management.
Available in various dosages, Velorita® effectively reduces HbA1c levels by a significant 1.4% to 2.2%, demonstrating a profound impact on improving glycemic control in patients with Type 2 diabetes and reducing major cardiovascular, renal, and hepatic complications and events.
Velorita® is manufactured in Canada utilizing state-of-the-art global technologies and strictly adhering to the highest quality standards, and is supplied to the Iranian pharmaceutical market by Cobel Darou.
Over the past two years, the technology transfer process for manufacturing this medication was initiated within the Cobel Group, alongside strategic investments to prepare the necessary production infrastructure. Currently, the under-license manufacturing of Velorita® is underway, and the domestically produced version of this medication will be available soon.
