Dr. Abidi Pharmaceuticals has unveiled Repiva® as a novel and effective solution for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, offering rapid efficacy, single-dose oral administration, and prevention of episodic migraine in adults.
Migraine is one of the most common debilitating neurological disorders, characterized by severe throbbing headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light (photophobia), and sensitivity to sound (phonophobia). It significantly reduces the quality of life for affected individuals and can disrupt their occupational performance, social relationships, and mental well-being. The chronic nature of the disease and the need for frequent treatments underscore the importance of accessing medications with a rapid onset of action, favorable safety profiles, and optimal tolerability.
Dr. Mehdi Asfia, Head of the Neurology Unit at Dr. Abidi Pharmaceuticals, stated: “Given the approximately 15% prevalence of migraine in Iran, it is estimated that nearly 10 million adults in the country face varying degrees of reduced productivity, limitations in daily activities, and the socio-economic burden associated with this condition. By targeting the primary pathway of migraine pain, Repiva® can help reduce the severity and frequency of attacks, thereby playing a crucial role in improving the quality of life for affected individuals.”
Repiva® belongs to the Gepants class and is a CGRP (Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide) receptor antagonist. Unlike Triptans, it functions without causing vasoconstriction and is therefore not associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular adverse events. By selectively inhibiting the CGRP receptor, this medication directly targets the primary pathway responsible for migraine pain, offering a targeted approach to migraine management. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Rimegepant leads to a clinically significant pain reduction within two hours of administration and a reduction in the number of monthly migraine days when used in preventive therapy.
Rimegepant received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in two stages: in February 2020 for the acute treatment of migraine attacks in adults, and in May 2021 for the preventive treatment of episodic migraine. It is the first oral Gepant to successfully obtain FDA authorization for both acute treatment and migraine prevention simultaneously, granting it a distinguished position among novel migraine therapies.
Repiva® is manufactured by Dr. Abidi Pharmaceuticals and is approved by the Iran Food and Drug Administration (IFDA). This medication is currently available nationwide through pharmacies, strictly by prescription.
